As we gear up to welcome the yearly crop of iPhones, lets take the time to look back at where Apple started out, and how far they've come. Not all the iPhones brought out over the years have been all that great, but some are definitely worth a mention. So take a nostalgia trip with us as we look at the evolution of the iPhone.

iPhone 1st Generation
The first Apple iPhone was launched on Jan 9, 2007, and was unveiled by Steve Jobs in San Francisco, California. The phone ran on iPhone OS,  laying the foundation for iOS. It sported a 2 megapixel camera and had a 3.5-inch screen. The first iPhone had a Samsung Processor and 128MB of RAM

iPhone  3G
The iPhone 3G was similar to the 1st generation in many aspects, but had a few changes: It introduced support for 3G (TriBand at 3.6 Mbps), had a GPS antenna built in, and the phone could do turn by turn navigation. The body too underwent a metamorphosis, going from metal to polycarbonate.

iPhone 3Gs
The display got a fingerprint resistant Oleophobic coating on the display, the processor got an update and the phone was much faster than the 3G. The camera was upgraded to a 3 megapixel sensor and the RAM was doubled (256MB). The camera could now do video recording and it had support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA.

iPhone 4
Design changes made it look different from its predecessors. A metal band around the phone was used as the antenna, the reason behind Antenna Gate. It was the first iPhone to sport Apple's very own A4 processor and the first phone for which Apple used the term Retina Display. The camera was also bumped up to 5 megapixels and was capable of recording video in HD resolution (720p). It also got  a front facing camera (0.3 megapixels), and a dual mic for noise suppression was also introduced.

iPhone 4S
The S in the 4S stood for SIRI, an intelligent personal assistant, and is still present in all iPhones and select iPads ever since. The processor was upgraded to a Dual Core chip and the camera was improved from 5 megapixel to 8 megapixel; it could now do 1080p video recording. Combined GSM/CDMA support made it the first global phone by Apple.

iPhone 5
The display grew to a 4-inch unit and still had Retina display. The old 30 pin connector was retired and the Lightning connector took its place. Apple's A6 Processor was introduced along with 1GB of RAM and a Triple Microphone for noise suppression. It was the first iPhone with LTE connectivity.

iPhone 5c
It was the first iPhone with Polycarbonate body and came with several bright colors. The hardware was similar to the iPhone 5. This was the first time Apple went back to a polycarbonate body since the iPhone 3G.

iPhone 5s
The iPhone 5s iPhone with Fingerprint Scanner and the processor updated to Apple A7 processor and M7 Motion Coprocessor. It was the first phone with a coprocessor and Dual tone LED Flash.

iPhone 6
The display was increased even further to 4.7 inches with a new Apple A8 Processor and the M8 Motion Coprocessor. NFC connectivity was added, as well slow-mo video supprt up to 240 FPS.

iPhone 6 Plus
This had a big 5.5-inch display, the first time Apple ventured into the phablet category. Still an 8 megapixel camera but with focus pixels for quicker autofocus.
