Yuvraj Singh named vice-captain of Indian team

Dashing left-hander Yuvraj Singh was named vice-captain of the Indian cricket team for the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup on Friday in place of an injured Virender Sehwag.

The 27-year-old Yuvraj, who holds the record of hitting six sixes in an over in the last edition of the T20 World Cup, was handed the honour hours before India's first Super Eight match against West Indies at the Lord's.

"In the absence of Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh has been named as vice captain for the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 in England", BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.

Yuvraj had been the vice-captain of the one-day team for a brief period in 2007-08.

Yuvraj's elevation to the vice-captaincy hardly came as a surprise as he is one of the senior members of the team and had also done a good job as the captain of King's XI Punjab in the recent Indian Premier League II in South Africa.

Sehwag, originally appointed as the vice-captain of the team, has been ruled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury which got aggravated after he landed in England.
