World Badminton Championships 2017, Highlights: Srikanth, Sameer, Tanvi win on opening day

PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal will be in action on the second day of the championships

India made a promising start at the World Championship with in-form shuttler Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma advancing to the second round of the men's singles competition on Monday. Srikanth, seeded eighth, who won the Indonesia Super series premier and Australian Super series Open in June, defeated Russia's Sergey Sirant 21-13 21-12 in less than half an hour match to set up a clash with France's Lucas Corvee in the next round. Sameer Verma, who won the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold in January, also reached the second round after his opponent Spain's Pablo Abian retired midway with the score reading 21-8 17-4 in favour of the Indian. Tanvi Shah and Rituparna Das also advanced to the second round in the women's singles. 

In the mixed doubles category, all Indian pairs in action moved to the next round. While Satwik Sairaj and K Maneesha beat Tam Chun Hei and Ng Tsz Yau of Hong Kong in a tight game, the Indo-Malayasian pair of Yogendran Krishnan and Prajakta Sawant defeated Lu Ching Yao and Chiang Kai Hsin in three games. Ashwini Ponnappa and Sumeeth Reddy moved into the next round after their opponents pulled out hours before the start of the event. In women's doubles Sanjana Santosh and Arathi Sara Sunil beat Natalya Voytsekh and Yelyzaveta Zharka of UKraine.

However, in men's doubles Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy lost too Korean pair of Chung Eui Seok/ and Kim Dukyoung. 

Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu will open their campaign on Tuesday, having got byes in the first round.
