St Francis D’Assisi completed a tremendous comeback by winning three consecutive matches after losing their opening match in the MSSA inter-school football tournament.

It was a treat to watch them in action as they thrashed Christ Church (Byculla) 4-0 at a rain-soaked Azad Maidan on Monday. The man of the match was Assisi’s skipper, Siddarth Nayak, who scored a hat-trick to lead his team to victory.

The 15 year old struck early in the fifth minute to give his team a 1-0 lead. Elton Quadros followed the footsteps of his captain and scored the second goal from the right corner of the goalpost.

Christ Church got an opportunity to fight back when Assisi’s goalie collected a back pass with his hands and granted them an indirect free kick from close quarters. However, the Byculla school failed to take advantage and the first half ended 2-0.

The next 30 minutes was action-packed. Six players from the Assisi camp were substituted at half time and the fresh set of players, who were playing football for the first time ever, charged into the field, all set to better their previous goal record. Siddarth aimed from the half line and the ball went past the goalkeeper to grant the centre-half his second goal.

The Borivli boys combined well but their next three attempts on the goal were offside. Just when Christ Church thought that their woes had ended, the Assisi skipper added more salt to their wounds by scoring another goal to complete his hat-trick. The Assisi coach, Thomas Barretto, was relieved.

“I am at ease now because I know we have qualified. The boys have shown a lot of improvement. Their performance today has been the best so far,” he said. The Borivli school are currently at the top of the table with 9 points.
