Vanita Gaikwad’s con game came to an end on Tuesday when she was arrested by the police on charges of decamping with gold ornaments and Rs81,000 cash from the Byculla flat of Farida Lakdawala, 60, a schoolteacher.

“We have recovered the stolen cash and the ornaments from Vanita’s home at Annabhau Sathe Nagar, Chembur,” assistant inspector BS Ghavate of the Byculla police station said on Thursday. “She has also admitted to stealing gold ornaments worth Rs2 lakh from a businessman’s home at Tardeo on July 15.”

The theft at the teacher’s flat took place on June 30. Vanita, after obtaining permission from the watchman, went to Farida’s flat at Shankalp Apartment around 2.45pm. She asked Farida whether she needed maid. As the school teacher had been looking for a maid, she asked Vanita to come in.

After a brief introduction, Farida asked Vanita to iron some clothes kept in the bedroom. Around 3.15 pm, Farida’s husband, Akbar, a businessman, came home for lunch. Farida got busy in the kitchen, and Vanita seized the opportunity. She found the key to the cupboard, and opening it, she removed the cash and the ornaments in a flash.

Farida returned to the bedroom around 3.50pm. By then, Vanita had closed the cupboard and kept the key back in its place. She told Farida that she was going downstairs to bring up her bag kept in the watchman’s room and left the flat, never to return.

In her complaint to the police, Farida had said that when Vanita did not come back she suspected foul play. Opening the cupboard, she found diamond and gold ornaments worth Rs1.91 lakh missing, along with Rs81,000 cash.

The police showed photos of several con women to Farida. Vanita’s photo was among them. The cops began hunting for her, and acting on a tip-off, head constable Dilip Bansode and his team nabbed her from Chembur.
