Two videos that went viral in the city highlighted the dual face of humanity. In one video clip, a motorman came to the rescue of a woman walking on the tracks at Charni Road railway station by stopping the train just in time. Another video clip, however, shows a policeman assaulting a homeless man who was sleeping on the premises of a railway station.
Motorman Santosh Kumar Gautam's heroic act earned him praise on social media. In the clip, people can be heard shouting at the woman, asking her to get off the track and climb on to the platform even as a Churchgate to Borivli local approaches. The woman in the video is reportedly hearing impaired.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel posted at Charni Road railway station came to the unidentified woman's aid soon after the harrowing incident.
"The woman could not hear people screaming out at her to get off the tracks. A commuter happened to shoot the entire incident. Luckily, the motorman applied the brakes in time to allow the woman to climb onto the platform," said a GRP officer.
Ravinder Bhakar, CPRO, Western Railway said: "We appreciate the motorman's quick thinking and bravery. He (Gautam) did not blow the train horn as he did not want to startle the woman," said Bhakar.
In the other video clip that went viral, a bystander happened to capture a police officer assaulting an aged, homeless man who was sleeping on railway premises. The cop used his baton to attack the man. He later kicked the man out of the station premises. The video also captured three policemen trying to drive out homeless persons from the railway premises. A senior officer of the Railway Protection Force, on condition of anonymity, said, "We are trying to establish the identity of the policemen involved in the incident."
