Around 139 types of laboratory tests from blood glucose to urine tests will be made available free of cost at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) peripheral hospitals as well as in dispensaries. At present, patients have to go to major civic hospitals or private laboratories for such tests.

As part of the scheme ‘Aapli Chikitsa’, the civic body has decided to take medical facilities to the doorsteps of citizens. Now, under the scheme, the health department will strengthen peripheral hospitals and dispensaries.

‘Aapli Chikitsa’ is an initiative of BMC to follow the ‘Mohalla’ model introduced by Delhi government. “Patients will be screened at ‘Aapli Chikitsa’ and accordingly treatment will be suggested,” said an official from the health department of BMC. He added: “If the doctor advices further investigation, then blood will be tested and the patient will get reports on the same day at these dispensaries. He or she does not need to go to KEM or any other major hospital.” The civic body had already made Rs 16 crore provision in the budget 2018-19.

A proposal to award contract to carry out around 139 types of tests, both basic and advanced, will come up in the standing committee next week. As per the proposal, the civic body will hire private laboratories which will collect sample and provide reports. Patients will not have to pay for all these pathological tests. However, the BMC will set to spend around Rs 26 crore for a year or Rs 79 crore for four years. The proposal will be tabled next week during standing committee meet.

According to official from BMC’s Health department, the civic body has been working to ease pressure from major hospitals. “We do not want that people with minor fever need to stand in queue in KEM or other hospital. These kinds treatment can be done in peripheral hospitals or dispensaries,” said the official. He added with free laboratory test in in peripheral hospitals or dispensaries will further ease pressure from hospitals.

Since major hospitals are overcrowded, patients often carry out tests in private by paying hefty amount.
