Mumbai Airport runway repair to be end tomorrow

The runway repair work started around the first week of February 2019 wherein workers ensured that re-carpeting work is undertaken without keeping the operations shut fully.

Around 700 people had been working continuously for six hours for three days every week to have finally completed 98 per cent of re-carpeting work of the runway at Mumbai Airport after a long period of almost two months.

The runway repair work started around the first week of February 2019 wherein workers ensured that re-carpeting work is undertaken without keeping the operations shut fully. They were allowed to work only for six hours thrice a week. According to Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the repair work was essential before monsoon from the safety point of view when it comes to taking off and landing of aircraft.

Till Thursday, 98 per cent of the repair work was completed and the remaining two per cent will be completed by Saturday. During the repair work period, hundreds of flights that were cancelled or rescheduled owing to repair works. The last major repair work was carried out nearly 10 years ago. 

According to Mumbai Airport officials, next big repair work may be carried after 8 years.

The Mumbai Airport runway is built of asphalt layer, and to maintain it is a very challenging task, said officials of Mumbai Airport. "Every day we carry out 40 minutes inspection for checking the runway followed by lights that are installed on the runway. However, considering this inspection is carried at around 3 am when it is dark, a 15 minutes weekly inspection is carried out during the day time during the afternoon," said an official.

The runway was shut due to maintenance work scheduled on the intersection of secondary and primary runways. The MIAL that maintains and operates the airport had assigned the repair work to four different companies. Other than relayering of the runway, the solutions are also undertaken for removal of rubber deposits from the runway from tyres of the aircraft. The airside lighting has also been changed or repaired, as per the aeronautical requirements, said the official.

Meanwhile, this also means that starting Sunday, there might be no cancellation or rescheduling of flights.
