Responding to criticism over increasing infighting in the party, the Congress party appointed Former Union Minister and South Mumbai MP Milind Deora as the city President. Deora replaces Sanjay Nirupam, who held the reigns for the last two years after taking charge from Congress MLC Adv Janardan Chandurkar.

There had been a bickering and infighting in the party unit since a while now. It is notable that a slew of leaders had recently met party leaders in Delhi to complain against Nirupam and his style of functioning. Nirupam, meanwhile, was nominated as the party candidate from the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency.

Deora, who is THE party's nominee from the south Mumbai thanked Congress president and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi for "trusting him" to lead.

"I appeal to all leaders and workers to work unitedly defending and furthering party ideals. The city of Mumbai needs politics of inclusive development. In my tenure, I will focus on holistic development, with a focus on housing for all, protection to small and medium enterprises, and enriching social and communal harmony," Deora said.
