The Mumbai crime branch has launched a massive manhunt for the kingpins of the illicit liquor trade. The sleuths are also probing the source from where the poisonous liquor was smuggled into Malwani. So far, the police have arrested five people in connection with tragedy that has claimed 90 lives.
"The arrested people are end-sellers and transporters of illicit hooch, but the main ones who brew the liquor are still at large," said an officer privy to the investigation.
The police have learnt that unauthorised production of alcohol is happening in some forested pockets of Aarey, Bhandup and Vikhroli as well as outside city limits – Vasai village and Virar.
Meanwhile, the city police have decided to come down heavily on illicit liquor sale and smuggling. The deputy commissioner of police (DCP) of each zone has been asked to carry out raids in his/her jurisdiction. "The commissioner has instructed us take strict action against this illegal business," said a DCP, who didn't wish to be name.
