Malabar Hill residents have opposed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to amend development control (DC) regulations to convert a green zone into a commercial zone near Kamala Nehru park and shelve plans for a viewing gallery where Café Naaz once stood.

The residents felt that contemplating changes in DC rules could destroy their most coveted location, which is the pride of the city and a tourist location.

More than a thousand morning walkers and residents have written to chief minister Ashok Chavan about their objections.

BMC had shelved plans to resurrect Café Naaz on April 14.

Additional municipal commissioner (projects) Anil Diggikar had told DNA that the hydraulic department had declared the structure too weak to bear the load of a viewing gallery.

Diggikar had also said that in its place, a tower would be constructed with a revolving gallery. “But before that, a change in DC regulations to convert the green zone will be required,” he said.

Residents who visit the park and Pherozeshah Mehta gardens, who have great memories of the place, are concerned about the BMC’s plans.

Indrani Malkani, secretary, Malabar Hill Residents’ Association, said, “Money for the Brand Malabar project, which includes the old Café Naaz, has been sanctioned by the civic standing committee. The structure was confirmed to be a viewing gallery. If the structure is unsafe, make it safe. It defies logic why the DC rules have to be changed. The area’s character should be preserved.”

    LETTER TO CM
Any change in development status will affect us all, including ministers who reside here.

We, like so many visitors to Mumbai, use the two gardens to view the city from its highest hill.

The green zone must remain to ensure controlled commercial activities and prevent pollution.

The DC rules should not be changed to ensure a clear view of the city without having a tower.
