Research students at the University of Mumbai will soon have access to an incubation centre, thesis-promotion team and other modern equipment, with authorities planning to convert the Thesis section into a research administration and promotion department.

The RAP department will come at the Green Technology building at the varsity's Kalina campus, Kalina.

Ravindra Kulkarni, pro-vice chancellor of MU, said they plan to provide a single umbrella infrastructure to the students and their guides as they often struggle with administrative work. "With RAP, everyone involved will look after each aspect of thesis work while the researcher and the guide can solemnly focus on research," said Kulkarni.

The top official said RAP will also collaborate with industry experts via faculty to promote the researches conducted by the students.

Since several years, students pursuing research courses have been complaining about lack of facilities in the Thesis section, which currently operates from MU's Fort campus. One of their major concerns has uploading thesis/dissertation on Shodhganga portal – a digital repository of the thesis by the University Grants Commission.

"Our library has more than 7 lakh books. Even after so, to search for a book we need to use the card-finder system. Instead of wasting my time in searching the cards then locating the books, it would be nice to have a computerised system," Gangesh Singh, a research student. Students have also raised concerns over fewer computers and lack of anti-plagiarism software. The Thesis section has only two plagiarism detectors.

Kulkarni assured that RAP will have the hi-tech infrastructure. "We already have an incubation centre which can be put to use for the research students. This will help them if they are working on topics involved in technological orientation or start-ups."

Time for ‘RAP’

  • MU will convert its Thesis section into a research administration & promotion dept (RAP)
  • RAP will include an incubation centre, more computers. It will cut down on administrative  hassles for students
