Citizens hand over demands to candidates ahead of this election

All political parties have released their manifestos giving their vision and plans for the city's development and upgradation of services. However, citizens who are directly affected by the civic services also have their viewpoint to put on record. While few civic groups and citizens forums having already announced their demands earlier, many NGOs, civic groups, and residents associations have started putting forth their demands, hardly a week before they ink their finger and cast their vote.

Action For Good Governance and Networking in India (AGNI) is sending a citizen demand charter to all parties. AGNI will release the demands this week. Sitaram Shelar, Convenor of Pani Hakk Samiti, founder of National Centre for promoting democracy and member Hamara Shaher Mumbai Abhiyan have also prepared a manifesto for Mumbai.

Kandivali Ashok Nagar Residents Association (KANRA) has also come up with a list of eight demands that need to be addressed by the civic representative of the area.

Apart from this most of the citizens' groups have also arranged 'meet your candidate' meetings where they can discuss civic issues that need immediate attention, and candidates are expected to come up with solutions and commitment to address the issue once they are elected. While in F-North ward, citizens have invited 10 candidates contesting in their area on Monday, Jagrut Juhu Civic and Political cell of St Joseph's Church in Juhu has invited all its candidates of ward 69 for the meet on Wednesday,

Free A Billion, a citizen group has already released their draft of demands last month. RTI activist Shailesh Gandhi and Mumbai Vikas Samiti, organisation of retired engineers had come up with various demands last month to strengthen civic governance and ensure complete transparency and accountability.

Shelar demands include affordable housing, shelter for 57,000 homeless in the city, free water, and better sanitation and upgraded school education up to class 8.

KANRA President Yashin Dalal said that they have demanded action against key issues plaguing the area such as traffic jams, regularising autorickshaws, illegal hawkers, lack of open spaces, public toilets, CCTV surveillance, illegal parking, and conveyance.

Krunal Goda, Joint Secretary of the association said that their demands have been handed over to all candidates.
