14 held for kidnapping four men, demanding Rs1.20 crore

According to the police, Irfan and Imran had given Rs7.50 lakh to complainant Imtiyaz Wadgama (40), a diamond broker and resident of Mira Road for diamond business.

The DB Marg police have arrested 14 persons for allegedly abducting a diamond broker and three of his associates and wrongfully confining them over a dispute. The accused allegedly demanded Rs1.20 crore from the four victims to set them free, police said.

Those arrested have been identified as — Irfan Namakwala, Imran Namakwala, Mohammad Ujwala, Shehzad Hussain, Momin Barmar, Nabi Shaikh, Asif Chapra, Imtiyaz Ahmed, Maqsood Momin, Balram Yadav, Sajid Gundekar, Hussain Kapadia, Sadiq Shaikh and Ravindra Yadav.

According to the police, Irfan and Imran had given Rs7.50 lakh to complainant Imtiyaz Wadgama (40), a diamond broker and resident of Mira Road for diamond business. The complainant had alleged that the said money was used to purchase diamonds and Rs8 lakh were given back to Irfan and Imran. However, the two along with their accomplices abducted Wadgama and his associates Shoaib Merchant, R Ibrahim and Yusuf Pathan.

"The victims claim that they were kept in a room and Rs30 lakh was demanded from each of them. They also claimed that they were assaulted and were made to sign on some bogus documents. Wadgama claimed that the abductors also threatened to strangulate him," said an officer from DB Marg police station.

He added that the police were informed by the victim's families and following this the police initiated their probe and managed to trace the victims. "The victims were abducted from Janta Electricals, DB Marg, Grant Road and were confined from September 21 to 23. The case was registered in the wee hours of Thursday," the officer said.

Those arrested have been booked under sections 364(A) (kidnapping for ransom), 307 (attempt to murder), 342 (wrongful confinement), 387 (putting a person under fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion), 465 (forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) of the Indian Penal Code.
