Looks like this season, designers across the board had the sunny climes of California on their mood-boards as they flirted with shibori prints and neoprene wetsuits. Be it Raf Simons tribute to Jaws at Calvin Klein or Proenza Schouler offering a sophisticated take on the tied-and-dye techniques. During Milan Fashion Week, Etro’s runways saw two real-life surfer girls adding to the sportified sensuality. At Paris Fashion Week, Marine Serre created a visual spectacle by recontextualising upcycled neoprene wetsuits into look-at-me gowns. Is the California surfer girl enjoying her moment under the sun? We get experts to gauge the trend...

BEACH INSPIRED

Beach and water bodies have been on designers’ mind this season — be it Chanel creating a seaside inside Grand Palais in Paris or Saint Laurent’s models walking on shallow waters but it’s brands like Calvin Klein and Etro which have recreated the vision of the quintessential surfer girl.

Stylist Eshaa Amiin easily pictures these wet suits and shibori prints on some of our Bollywood beauties.

“Disha Patani can pull it off, even Kiara Advani has a sense of quirk so it’s up her alley. Among the younger lot, Khushi Kapoor has got that surfer edge,” says Eshaa.

A DIFFERENT MUSE

While it’s not uncommon to see actors and supermodels on the runway, it was cool to see real life surfers for a change. Stylist Isha Bhansali observes, “You need a different muse to connect with your audience. A lot of brands do beachwear but at Etro it was good to see it on the real people.”

EXPRESSIVE YOUTH

Tie-and-dye in hyper bright colours to handmade macrame coverups to bleach dyed denims — this trend is about expressive youth. Designer Aniket Satam says, “Beachwear essentials such as scuba monokinis, nylon parkas, bucket hats and hand braided bracelets complete this look. This trend also dwells on the resort basics — boxy resort shirts, Hawaiian shirts, kitsch printed Bermudas and retro touristy T-shirt flashing popular beach names. This trend is relevant to the millennials and would be super if it escalates in the high street in spring 2019.”
