A platform for the distressed women, the public hearing (Jansunwai ) of Rajasthan Women Commission was set to witness tales of exploitation. However, absence of senior administrative and police officials also narrated of the administrative apathy towards these women. Even those present at the hearing displayed inadequate understanding of the issues.

This inconsiderate attitude of the departments even discomforted the woman commission chairperson, Suman Sharma, who warned to complain against their behaviour. “The senior officials, who arrived late, said they were pre-occupied with other official duties. However, the public hearing is also important and their presence is vital for immediate action on the issues,” Suman Sharma said.

District collector and deputy commissioner of police joined the hearing. However, as the hearing proceeded, more instances of administration’s apathy towards the exploitation victim came to light.

An elderly woman, appeared at the hearing seeking ‘maintenance’ of her daily needs by her family members. Estranged from the family, the woman was unable to find any relief from the police and other officials. Considering her plea, the women commission issued necessary directions to the administrative officials.

Another was a rape victim, that narrated of her hardships to get case registered against the accused. However, her troubles did not seem to end despite his arrest as he continues to threaten her from the prison.

“He posted objectionable photos of me on social media, that the police has been unable to get withdrawn despite my several complaints. On the other hand, he calls me from the prison and threatens of dire consequences,” the rape victim pleaded ahead of the officials. The women commission which assured the victim of security, has also decided to write to director general jail in this regard. “This is a serious issue and even if it’s not for the first time that use of mobile phones in prison gets exposed,” said a woman commission official.
