After Zika, swine flu raising its head again in Rajasthan

HINI has claimed 200 lives during period between from Jan 1 and Oct 22

At the time when Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan is witnessing India’s biggest outbreak of Zika Virus Disease (ZVD), the state has also registered the highest cases of swine flu in the country, the deadly disease that claimed 279 deaths in 2017. 

The Influenza H1N1 virus continues to present a challenge in front of state health department as around 2,000 patients have been tested positive of swine flu with more than 10% mortality rate, which is second in the country after Maharashtra.

As per the state health department’s daily monitoring report on swine flu, during the period between January 1 and October 22 this year, total 200 people have succumbed to swine flu in Rajasthan. 

During this period total 19,630 people were tested for swine flu, out of which 1,954 have been found positive. According to Integrated Diseases Surveillance Programme (IDSP) of National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Rajasthan has surpassed Maharashtra in reported swine flu cases. Total 1,793 people have tested positive for the virus in Maharashtra. Maharashtra had recorded 217 deaths, more than the number of deaths occurred in Rajasthan. 

In Rajasthan, so far swine flu has claimed 200 lives across the state this year. Out of these, 4 cases of death are of those patients who are out of the state. Jaipur is worst effected with the virus H1N1 where around 850 people have been found swine flu positive and 37 people have died of the disease till October 22 this year. In 4 districts of Kota division, the diseases has claimed 65 lives so far during this year. In Jaipur division 52 deaths have been reported. 

While 31 deaths have occurred in Jodhpur division while Ajmer division has recorded 30 deaths due to swine flu since January 1, 2018.

It is worth mentioning here that H1N1 virus in the state has changed its strain called the Michigan strain, making it active in high temperature conditions,  like in Maharashtra. Prior to this, the strain that has been existing in India was California. Last year, 3,619 people were found swine flu positive in Rajasthan.
