The entire country was left shocked when the CCTV footage of a rape victim wandering the streets emerged, with major backlash on Madhya Pradesh government for making no arrested for 72 hours. Now, the Ujjain police has detained five people, including one auto-rickshaw driver.

Police have taken into custody an autorickshaw driver in connection with the rape of a girl, who was found bleeding on a street in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain city, and five others are also being questioned in the case, a senior official said on Thursday.

The police have also found some blood stains on the passenger seat of the autorickshaw of the detained man, he said. The driver also tried to flee from the custody of the police but was unable to do so and fell down the stairs, according to reports.

According to Ujjain police, a counsellor interacted with the minor rape victim and found that the latter belongs to the Satna district. However, police in Satna said whether she is the same girl about whom a missing person's report was filed will be confirmed after her family identifies her.

A jarring CCTV footage showed the victim stumbling on the streets while covered in blood and wearing torn clothes, with a man seen shooing her away. Eventually, the girl reached a temple and a priest ended up clothing her and taking her to the hospital.

News reports state that the girl had walked in an injured state for 8 km before getting medical attention. The Ujjain priest who helped the girl recalled his encounter with her, saying that her eyes were swollen and she was half naked.

The priest gave the girl his clothes and took her to the ashram, where he called the authorities. He said that the girl couldn’t speak and would cower behind him if anyone else approached. The victim is currently receiving treatment in Indore.
