Shardiya Navratri 2018: Date, Time, Ghatasthapana Muhurta, Vrat schedules and all other details

This year, the Shardiya Navratri will begin on October 10. Next Wedensday will mark the beginning of one of the most auspicious occasions in the Hindu calendar.

The 9-day celebration begins on October 10th with the faithful fasting and worshipping nine different avatars of Goddess Durga.

The most important ritual is kalash sthapna or ghatasthapna as it marks the beginning of Navratris.

Ghatasthapna is a way to invoke Goddess Durga and it is very important to know the correct muhurat for the ritual.

This year, the Ghatasthapana Muhurta starts from 06:22 am and ends at 07:25 am. The duration of the muhurata is 1 hour 2 minutes. 

According to Drik Pachang, Ghatasthapana Muhurta falls on Pratipada Tithi

Ghatasthapana Muhurta falls during Chitra Nakshatra which cannot be avoided

Ghatasthapana Muhurta falls during Vaidhriti Yoga which cannot be avoided

Pratipada Tithi Begins = 09:16 on 9/Oct/2018

Pratipada Tithi Ends = 07:25 on 10/Oct/2018


Shardiya Navratri Dates: Navdurga Pujan

October 10th: Shailputri Puja and Brahmacharini Puja (note that dwitiya will also be observed on day 1); October 11: Chandraghanta Puja; October 12: Kushmanda Puja; October 13: Skandamata Puja; October 14: Saraswati Awahan; October 15: Katyayani Puja; October 16: Saraswati Puja and Kalaratri Puja; October 17: Durga Ashtami; October 18: Ayudha Puja, Navami and October 19 is the date of Durga Visarjan and is also celebrated as Vijaydashmi. 

This year, Goddess Durga is arriving on a boat and will depart  on an elephant. 

Kanya pujan

On Ashtami and Navmi, many households will conclude the Navratri with 'Kanya pujan'.

It includes washing feet of 9 young girls below th age of 13 and a young boy that symbolises Hanuman or Langur.

These 'Kanyas' are offered halwa, chana and poori.
