BJP chief Amit Shah has hinted that his party is waiting for 2020 to make a move on a number of issues that have formed its core issues of interest. He said the composition of the Rajya Sabha would change next year, suggesting that the Narendra Modi government has not moved on some of these issues would have run aground in the Upper House of Parliament, because it did not have a majority there.

Amit Shah's remarks came in a conversation with Zee Media's Sudhir Chaudhary at Zee News's 'India ka DNA' conclave in New Delhi. Shah was asked about the criticism that the Modi government had not acted on a number of issues like the building of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple or enacting Constitutional amendments on Jammu and Kashmir.

"The Ram Mandir issue is in court. And I hope it will be resolved soon. When you talk about something like Article 35A (of the Constitution), as you well know, it is stuck in the Rajya Sabha. The composition of the Rajya Sabha is set to change in 2020, and we will have a majority there too," Shah responded, leaving the rest unsaid.

With the 2019 Lok Sabha elections nearing, the past few months have seen rumblings from certain sections of the BJP's support base that pet issues like Ram Mandir or Uniform Civil Code or the abrogation of Article 370 had been given the short end of the stick by the Narendra Modi government.

The government has, as Shah said, found the going tough in the Rajya Sabha on a number of issues, given the fact that it doesn't have a majority in the Upper House. The BJP however has steadily been raising its profile in the Rajya Sabha, thanks to a string of electoral victories in states across the countries. These victories, some of them by massive margins, would no doubt help the party take control of the Rajya Sabha as well.
