A Himachal Pradesh-based IAS officer, Yunus Khan, and his wife Anjum Ara, an IPS officer, have promised financial support to the youngest daughter of martyr Naib Subedar Paramjeet Singh.
Singh, from the 22 Sikh Infantry of the Indian Army, was martyred and his body mutilated by the Pakistan army on May 1. He is survived by his wife, Paramjit Kaur and three children, Simardeep, Khushdeep and son, Sahildeep.
"Our soldiers are guarding us. They are standing on the borders for protecting our lives and I have always felt that it is our moral responsibility to stand by them in their hour of need," said Khan, a 2010 batch IAS officer, currently Deputy Commissioner (DC), Kullu.
Khan and Anjum, who is currently posted as Superintendent of Police (SP), Solan, talked to the family members of the martyr.
"We had a long discussion with his brother and the family has welcomed our decision. We will support Khushdeep Kaur (12) till she gains stability in her career and becomes financially independent. We will bear all expenses, right from her schooling to matrimony," Khan told DNA.
The couple has a three-year-old son, but he says that his definition of family extends beyond conventional terms. "As administrative officers, we come across several people in need of help, and I think it is my service that has enabled me to take this step," said Khan.
The couple is slated to visit Singh's family in Tarn Taran district of Punjab on Saturday. While Khushdeep will continue to stay with her family, Khan says they will visit her from time to time.
