BJP leaders today mourned the death of actor Dev Anand as an "end of an era" in Indian film world and passing away of the "guide" of entertainment industry.

Expressing grief over the death of the actor, Party President Nitin Gadkari said, "He was one of the most versatile film personalities of Bollywood,"

Gadkari said he has always been a great fan of Dev Anand and his death is a personal loss to him.

In his condolence message posted on Twitter, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said, "The guide of entertainment industry Dev Anand Sahab has passed away. Our tribute to him... May his soul rest in peace."

Modi recalled that during the 1975-77 Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, Dev Anand was the one who stood up in favour of democracy with "most conviction".

BJP chief spokesperson and General Secretary Ravi Shankar Prasad said Dev Anand was a true icon who inspired several generations.

"I deeply mourn the demise of legendary actor Dev Anand. He was a true icon who inspired generations and generations of Indians and remained young and exuberant till his last breath. He died also completely at peace with himself," Prasad said.

He said that he has a great sense of personal fulfillment as the Dada Sahab Phalke award was given to Dev Anand when he was the Information and Broadcasting Minister in the NDA government.

"This award ought to have been given to him much earlier but for some strange reason this was not done. It was given to his contemporaries Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor many years before him," Prasad said, adding Dev Anand will continue to inspire youngsters for generations to come.
