Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in South Africa for the 15th BRICS Summit and recently conversed with the Chinese President Xi Jinping after both of them landed in Johannesburg. As per a video footage of the conference, both the leaders could be seen engaging in a conversation while moving towards their designated seats.

At a media briefing along with the BRICS leaders in Johannesburg, Modi said admitting Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as new members will give new energy and direction to the grouping.

The decision on expansion of the five-nation grouping was announced by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the end of the three-day BRICS summit in Johannesburg. Here is all you need to know about the BRICS summit.

Which countries are parts of the BRICS summit?

BRICS is defined as the grouping of the world economies – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The BRICS covers a total population of over 3.21 billion people, with Russia China and India considered to be the emerging superpowers of the world.

Further, BRICS has decided to admit six new countries as members - Argentina, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Egypt. This move holds the potential to open the doors for numerous interested countries to align with a coalition committed to championing the interests of the "Global South".

"I am happy that our teams have together agreed on guiding principles, standards, criteria, and procedures for expansion of BRICS," PM Modi said about the expansion. "I am happy that many positive outcomes came out of three days' of deliberations," he added.

Is Pakistan going to be part of BRICS Summit?

While Pakistan is not a part of the BRICS Summit yet but its ally China has been pushing for its entry in the global partnership. However, this proposition has encountered a resistance from India, which might lead to the dissolving of the entire alliance.
