Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan are almost universally considered Hindi cinema’s most successful on-screen pair in the last three decades. It would surprise many that they have actually appeared opposite each other in only six movies in all this time. To put that in context, Indian cinema’s most prolific on screen couple did a whopping 130 films together under 20 years, and nearly half of them were hits.

The Guinness World Record for most films together as a lead pair is held by superhit Malayalam actors Prem Nazir and Sheela, who appeared in as many as 130 films together between 1962 and 1981. The two actors were the most successful on screen pair in Malayalam cinema for all this while and delivered several hit films. As per industry insiders, over 50 of their films together were big hits, which means they delivered multiple hits each year. Their pairing was broken when Sheela took a break from films in 1983 when she got married and settled overseas. Prem Nazir died in 1989 at the age of 62.

Prem Nazir is considered the first superstar in Malayalam cinema and was fondly called Nithyaharitha Nayakan (Evergreen Hero). After making his film debut in 1952, he quickly established himself as Malayalam cinema’s leading man. Sheela debuted in films in 1962 and worked opposite Prem Nazir the same year. Over the years, some of their biggest hits included Velutha Kathreena, Kutti Kuppayam, Sthanarthy Saramma, Kadathanattu Makkam, and Kannappanunni among others.
Prem Nazir’s other world records
Prem Nazir was one of the most prolific actors in the history of cinema. For the longest time, he held the Guinness World Record for most film appearances (over 700) before it was taken by another Indian actor Brahmanand. He still holds two other records – most film releases in a year (30) and starring opposite most heroines in his career (80).
