The Tamil-language horror comedy Chandramukhi 2, starring Raghava Lawrence, Lakshmi Menon, and Kangana Ranaut in the leading roles, hit cinemas on Thursday, September 28. Directed by P Vasu, the film has also been dubbed and released in Telugu and Hindi languages.

Chandramukhi 2 opened at Rs 8.25 crore across the three languages, collected Rs 4.35 crore on its second day, and added Rs 4.86 crore on its third day, taking the three-day net India total to Rs 17.46 crore, as per the data from the entertainment tracking portal Sacnilk.com.

The film is the sequel to the 2005 blockbuster Tamil psychological horror-comedy Chandramukhi starring Rajinikanth and Jyothika in the lead roles. Apart from the three main leads, the sequel also stars Raadhika Sarathkumar, Mahima Nambiar, Subiksha Krishnan, Srishti Dange and Vadivelu in the supporting roles.

Since the 2005 film featured a memorable titular performance from Jyothika, Kangana was asked about the comparisons during a media interaction prior to the sequel's release. The Panga actress had then responded, "I am a fan of Jyotika ma’am’s Chandramukhi myself. However, unlike before, I am playing the real Chandramukhi in this film. I am not the one who gets possessed by Chandramukhi. That’s the difference. My character will reveal why she became a ghost in the first place. Lakshmi Menon’s character is the one which is inspired by Jyotika Ma’am’s character. What I am doing in the film is playing the original Chandramukhi."

Released 18 years back, Chandramukhi itself was a remake of the 1993 Malayalam superhit Manichitrathazhu, starring Shobhana, Mohanlal, and Suresh Gopi in the leading roles. The film was remade in several languages including in Hindi in 2007 as Bhool Bhulaiyaa starring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, and Shiney Ahuja.
