IIT-JEE examination is considered by many as one of the toughest exams in India and rightly so as lakhs of students appear in IIT-JEE examination every year but only a few thousands of them manage to crack the IIT-JEE exam. After cracking the exam, students take admission in different IITs across the country, like IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, etc. But there are a few students who drop out of IIT after cracking the IIT JEE exam in order to chase their dreams and one such student was Chitraang Murdia who dropped out of IIT Bombay in order to follow his true passion. Chitraang Murdia had succeeded in bagging AIR-1 in the JEE Advanced 2014 but he decided to quit Computer Science course at IIT Bombay to study Physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Explaining the reason behind his decision to quit IIT after just one year, Chitraang Murdia said in Humans of Bombay post, “Everybody was shocked by this decision and that included even my friends. People used to say that you are a kid and don’t know how to take important decisions of your life and you will be earning in lakhs after receiving the Engineering degree from IIT.”

According to Chitraang Murdia’s LinkedIn profile, he completed from Graduation in Physics from MIT in 2018. He did his PhD from University of California, Berkeley in 2023.

Chitraang Murdia had once said that his decision to quit IIT and follow his passion will inspire students. “I have seen the students who are good in physics and maths are following the herd to seek admission to courses such as computer science and electrical engineering. It will definitely boost up the moral of those students who wish to pursue their interest in pure science but couldn’t do that because of the family pressure or money,” he said.
