Widespread reports on Monday morning suggest that India captain Virat Kohli will soon step down as the captain of the T20 and ODI teams after the T20 World Cup. Based on reports from a leading English daily, the decision is finalized and an announcement is expected soon from the captain himself alongside the Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI). Veteran opener Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to take over the reins of the ODI and T20 teams from Kohli.

Sharma, who is the most successful captain in Indian Premier League, is set to be the captain after Kohli leads the T20 team for one final time at the T20 World Cup later this year.

As per the report, sources from BCCI were quoted suggesting that Kohli believes that he needs to focus on his batting to find a way back to becoming the world’s best batsman.

One of India’s most successful captains across formats, Kohli is said to have already told the BCCI and fellow veteran player Rohit Sharma about his intention to share the responsibility of leading Team India across different formats.

India has won 38 tests, 65 ODIs and 29 T20s under the leadership of Virat Kohli (32).

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma has led the IPL team Mumbai Indians to five championships in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. In 8 years of Sharma’s captaincy, MI reached the playoffs on 6 occasions.
