India's captain, Rohit Sharma, addressed the country's bowling attack for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 after unveiling the squad on Tuesday, September 5th. Sharma emphasized the team's initial focus on finding an off-spinner to maintain a well-rounded lineup.

During a press conference, Sharma revealed that there were deliberations surrounding the selection of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, as both players possess the ability to generate movement with the ball.

The skipper of the Men in Blue further emphasized that fast bowlers play a more prominent role in the 50-over format, expressing contentment with the current bowling attack.

“Clearly there were discussions as both Jadeja and Axar took the ball away. We would have ideally wanted an off-spinner but this gives us the best balance. The Pacers bowl more in ODIs anyway. We’re happy with the bowlers we have,” Rohit said.

Rohit Sharma stated that the format for the ODI World Cup 2023 is different, with teams playing nine league games. The Indian skipper emphasized that this format allows teams to establish their rhythm in the tournament. He further explained that even if a team faces an initial loss in this format, they have the opportunity to bounce back in the latter half.

“It’s different, especially the format, where you play nine league games, semis and finals, that is 11 games. We played that format in the World Cup in 2019, and there’s always a chance for you to make a comeback.

“We saw last time around, how England made a comeback to the semis and the finals after losing their way early. It gives you more time to think about strategy and what you’re going to execute as a team.

“T20 format is different where you have less time. We had to beat Pakistan and SA to qualify for the semifinals. Here, even if you don’t start well, you have the time to make a comeback. It does give you a little more breathing space,” Rohit Sharma said.

India will commence their ODI World Cup 2023 journey by facing Australia on October 8th at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Simultaneously, the highly anticipated clash of the tournament will unfold on October 14th, as the Men in Blue go head-to-head against Pakistan at the illustrious Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
