India upset defending champions Australia in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 campaign opener in Sydney Showground Stadium on Friday.

Poonam Yadav's four-wicket haul changed the course of the game as Australia, who were chasing 133, collapsed from 55/1 to 115-all out.

Poonam inflicted the maximum damage as she finished with figures 4/19.

She was supported by Shikha Pandey who took 3/14 as India won the tournament opener by 17 runs.

The two attained these figures with the help of wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia.

Opener Alyssa Healy struck 51 off 35 to ensure the Aussies made a solid start and they even looked to win the clash.

However, the Indian spinners turned the game around as wickets kept tumbling towards the end.

Ashleigh Gardner (34) tried to keep the host in power, but she fell in the final over from which they needed 21 runs.

Earlier, Australia captain Meg Lanning, who had opted to field first could not restrict India opening pair of Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana as they got off to a flying start.

Shafali, making her world cup debut, took on the Aussie bowlers with five fours and a six in her 15-ball 29.

The Indian duo added 41 runs in just four overs, however, Jess Jonassen struck with the wicket of Mandhana on 10.

Soon after Mandhana's wicket, the innings slipped as Ellyse Perry got rid of the dangerous-looking Shafali leaving with India losing their openers in quick succession.

From 41/0, India slipped to 47/3 when captain Harmanpreet Kaur (2) was stumped off Jonassen.

Deepti Sharma and Jemimah Rodrigues soon got India to a stable condition as they added 53 runs for the fourth wicket. Rodrigues then fell in the 16th over, but Deepti remained unbeaten on 49  to guide India to 132 runs.
