Coal India hits 99% of June output target

Coal India, one of the largest global coal miners, has achieved production of 42.72 million tonnes in June as against a target of 43.31 MT for the month.

The broader goal is to produce 1 billion tonne of the dry fuel by 2020.

The state-owned behemoth, which has eight producing arms, achieved 99% of the monthly target of 43.31 MT in June. For April-June of 2016-17, the miner recorded a provisional production of 125.65 MT of coal as against a target of 132.43 MT.

Off-take in June, at 44.96 MT, was also lower than the targeted level of 47.52 MT for the month. For April-June, the figure stood at 133.19 MT (149.88 MT).

The government has set a production target of 598 million tonnes for CIL for the current fiscal, which accounts for over 80% of the domestic coal output.

Last fiscal, Coal India production grew at 8.5% to 536 MT, but the miner missed its target of 550 MT.

CIL's eight dry-fuel producing subsidiaries are ECL (West Bengal), BCCL (Jharkhand), CCL (Jharkhand), SECL (Chhattisgarh), WCL (Maharashtra), NCL (Madhya Pradesh), MCL (Odisha) and NEC (North East).

The Centre has announced plans to boost Coal India's annual production to meet growing fuel demand.
