Om Raut’s film Adipurush released in the theatres on June 16 this year as one of the most-awaited films of 2023. However, the film had been plagued by controversies and delays for months prior to release, beginning with trolling for the VFX in the teaser, right down to the casting choices. Upon release, controversies arose further with criticism for dialogue and creative liberties from the source material.

Released as the biggest and grandest Indian film ever, Adipurush ended up becoming the biggest lesson for filmmakers this year. As the year comes to a close, we take a look at the lessons future filmmakers can take from the failure of Adipurush.

Cultural sensitivity: The failure of the film highlighted the need for cultural sensitivity when adapting mythological narratives. The filmmaker should make such films with responsibility and care, they should think and respect emotions of the people so that they don't hurt their religious sentiments.

Being sensitive while taking creative liberties: If a filmmaker tries to change the old story which many people believe as a true history, then it can create controversies as it will hurt the emotions of the people.

Marketing and promotion: A big-budget film like Adipurush proved that marketing can create hype, but it is the quality of the film that makes it successful. In Adipurush's case, netizens felt cheated when only the trailer of the film was improved, but not the actual film which has bad VFX. Maintaining transparency between trailers and the film is important to win the audience's trust.

Importance of dialogue: The basic and the most important lesson one should learn from Adipurush is the importance of dialogue. Makers of the film were criticised because dialogue like ‘jali kya’ in the Ramayan adaptation left netizens in shock.

Casting choices: The filmmakers were slammed for their bad casting choices as moviegoers couldn't see Lord Rama in Prabhas and Ravana in Saif Ali Khan, they failed to connect to the film. So choosing the right cast is very important for any filmmaker.

Content is the king: Despite promotions, the film failed to impress the audience which proves it is the content that matters.

Adipurush is a perfect example of why a filmmaker should touch sensitive subjects carefully as it may hurt the sentiments of a large number of people. Filmmakers also have the responsibility to be honest with their audience, honesty is crucial in filmmaking. If filmmakers try to cheat their audience using good marketing techniques instead of genuine content, fans might lose trust in them. Being truthful is key to maintaining a strong relationship with the audience.
