Sanjay Dutt and Mahesh Bhatt share a great professional as well as personal relationship. The actor and the director, who have collaborated on five projects till date — Naam (1986), Kabzaa (1988), Sadak (1991), Gumrah (1993) and Kartoos (1999) — will now work together in Sadak 2. The project, sure, is an ambitious one with Bhatt stepping out of retirement and Gen-Now star Alia Bhatt joining the cast alongside Sanjay and Pooja Bhatt. However, when it came to remuneration, Sanju surprised the makers.

Pooja reveals, “He was like, ‘What remuneration?’ Mukesh Bhatt (the film’s producer) actually jumped from his chair.” The Munnabhai actor, on his part, says, “When Bhatt saab is directing, I don’t want a make-up guy or a hair artiste. I don’t even need to look into a mirror or need a van to sit in.”

Talking about their equation, the filmmaker says, “I remember when Sanju was in jail for the first time, all of us were at Mehboob Studio with Dutt saab (Sunil Dutt). As he got into his car, he turned back and asked me to join him. I wondered why. Perhaps, he saw in me, what would be an enduring relationship. A father realised what he wanted for his son when he would be no more. The implicit faith that he had is probably the reason our relationship has endured through the movie industry’s frivolities. We’ve drawn so much from our personal angst. When he would come back on parole, we would sit in silence. That’s when one realises you can’t do anything to help the people you love in their moment of great anguish. Naam captured that and Sadak 2, too,  will tap into it.”

Sanjay, who was keen on a sequel to the 1991 release, was eager that Bhatt himself should direct the film. “For me, he is more than family or a friend. He is also like a brother and a father. It’s not just about films. His family has been with me during my worst times as well as the happy ones,” the actor signs off.
