Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan has released in theatres to a massive response. The much-anticipated film first broke the all-time record for advance bookings by any Bollywood film and now looks to replicate that feat with its opening day collection again. If the morning show footfalls are any indication of how things stand, Shah Rukh Khan is out to break his own record, which he set less than eight months ago with Pathaan.

Jawan collected Rs 40 crore gross in just advance collections for day one even before a single show began. The morning shows started on a promising note taking advantage of the Janmashtami holiday and the afternoon shows did even better. Trade analysts say that Jawan’s Hindi version alone could net Rs 65 crore on Thursday, way higher than Pathaan’s record of Rs 55 crore. In additions, sources from south say that the Tamil and Telugu versions could also add Rs 8-10 crore combined, giving Jawan an unprecedented Rs 73-75 crore opening day. In comparison, Pathaan had earned Rs 57 crore on day one.

Given that Jawan is directed by Atlee, a known name in Tamil cinema, and stars Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, it was expected to do well in south. But the film’s Hindi version outdoing Pathaan was unthinkable till a week ago. If Jawan does manage to hold course, the 75-crore mark should be well within its reach.

Interestingly, Jawan is doing better than Pathaan in the overseas markets as well. Pathaan had earned just over $4.5 million (Rs 37 crore) overseas on the day of its release. In comparison, trade sources are expecting Jawan to cross $6 million (Rs 50 crore) easily. If this comes true, the film will register a worldwide gross of Rs 130-135 crore, unthinkable for a Hindi film till last year. Only one Bollywood film has ever earned Rs 100 crore on opening day – Pathaan, which made Rs 105 crore on January 25.

If Jawan reaches the Rs 135 crore figure, it will be fourth biggest opening ever for an Indian film, behind only RRR, Baahubali 2, and KGF Chapter 2. The footfalls in the evening and night shows will now determine just how well the film can do.
