Even though it is only mid September, the state has received 118% of its average seasonal rains, according to government data. Till Thursday morning, the state recorded 963 mm, which is 18% more than the seasonal average of 816 mm.

The average rainfall observed in Kutch region was 142.18%, 93.04% in north Gujarat, 107.05% in east-central Gujarat, 119.88% in Saurashtra and 127.77% in south Gujarat.

Heavy downpour continued on Thursday as well, with 71 talukas flooded till 8 pm. Thirty talukas received more than 25 mm — Vyara got 112 mm, followed by Mandvi (Surat) with 109 mm, Waghai got 75 mm and Choryasi taluka with 65 mm rains.

The downpour has disrupted life for the residents. A total of 17 villages near Phodala dam in Porbandar were issued a high alert as dam water rose alarmingly.

Neighbouring Madhya Pradesh also saw severe rainfall which led to waterlogging. A high alert was issued in many cities, and areas adjacent to rivers were being evacuated. As of Wednesday, the state got 26% more rains than normal, due to which dams were being opened across the state.
