With just a few days to go for Valentine’s Day, posters urging the youth to ‘Say No to Valentine’s Day’ has come up in Ahmedabad.
Most of these posters-cum-stickers have been put up outside colleges in the city and are accompanied by another sticker that warns the youth about Love-Jihad. The poster that shows a face partly revealed on one side and in burkha on another side warns Hindu girls to be beware. The Bajrang Dal that took credit for the the stickers said that the twin purpose was to tell the youth about the dangers of Love Jihad and that Valentine’s Day celebration was against Indian culture.
“Let me clarify that we are not against love. We have a problem with the obscene display happening in the name of love during days like Valentine’s Day,” said Jwalit Mehta, A’bad city president for Bajrang Dal. “Have you seen the cards that youth exchange during Valentine’s Day? They show couples kissing. Is that our culture? Is it how we should be celebrating love?” questioned Mehta.
“We don’t mind western concepts that are helpful. Say Cricket is a game that was brought to us by the British but we have no problem with that. But Valentine’s Day is not about love anymore it is about vulgar display of emotions,” said Mehta.
Interestingly, the organization also claims to have organised ‘seminars’ at colleges to warn the youth about Love Jihad and also convince them not to celebrate Valentine’s Day. “Our members go to colleges and have group talks with students. While initially the students are resistant, 80% come around to our point of view,” said Mehta. He, however, admitted that it did not mean that all of them would desist from celebrating Valentine’s Day.
