The season of Kesar Keri or mangoes — unfortunately — got over a bit early this year due to early rain. Yet, the last or perhaps the latest arrival of the juicy Kutchi Kesar mangoes was made two days ago, which means this species is all set to bid adieu, too.

Usually, the mango season lasts till the monsoon arrives. “The season of Kutchi Kesar — the pride of Gujarat — started in the second to third week of May this year. Had the rain not arrived early, it would have lasted longer. Normally, the season lasts till the first week of July. But, due to the early arrival of monsoon in the first week of June, the season started getting over last month itself,” said Ranjit Patel, a mango farmer of Bhuj.

“Owing to a few spells of shower in the first week of June, the crop did not ripen much. As a result, prices fell drastically from about Rs30 to Rs35 per kg to less than Rs15 per kg in the wholesale market,” said Patel.

In Ahmedabad, the last consignment of mangoes arrived till Monday and Tuesday. “The season is over. Now, we are not going to seek the new arrivals of Kutchi Kesar. We received the last parcel last week,” said mango trader Pranav Patel.

However, farmers of Saurashtra and Valsad witnessed a bumper Alphonso harvest this season. This year, Talala APMC yard witnessed 100 per cent rise in the supply of mangoes. “Last year, about 6 lakh boxes (1 box = 10 kg) were sold from Talala. This year, we sold 11.85 lakh boxes. Even the price remained better at an average of Rs245 per box as wholesale price,” said Talala yard president Vallabh Chhothani.

“In Ahmedabad, maximum mangoes came from Saurashtra and some from Valsad. And, since the last week of May, mangoes from Kutch started arriving,” said Shyamlal Rohra, president of the Ahmedabad Wholesale Fruit Merchant Association.

“Right now, Langda and other varieties from north India are coming for Rs30 per kg,” said Rohra, adding that till the end of the season, the price of mango hovered around Rs60 to Rs75 per kg in Ahmedabad this year.
