A New York city woman has been permitted by a judge to serve divorce papers to her husband via Facebook. Manhattan Supreme Court justice Mathew Cooper issued the ruling, according to the Daily News.

Ellanora Baidoo and her lawyer Andrew Spinnell sent a private Facebook message regarding the divorce to husband Victor Sena Blood-Dzraku, which will be repeated for three weeks or until the message has been acknowledged, according to the Daily News.

CNN reports, Baidoo who has been trying to file for divorce for several years, had to prove that the Facebook account belonged to her husband and that he frequently logged into that account in order to receive the court ordered messages.

The rulings was granted because Blood-Dzraku has only been in touch with his wife via social media and the phone, after their separation. The couple was married in 2009 in a civil ceremony. However, their relationship reportedly hit the rocks when Blood-Dzraku broke his promise to his wife to have a traditional Ghanaian wedding ceremony.

The unconventional proceeding may be the first of its kind, but similar cases maybe treated the same way, now that one judge finds it acceptable to serve divorce papers via social media.
