In a bizarre incident from Maharashtra, a buffalo swallowed a 25-gram gold mangalsutra, worth over Rs 1.5 lakh, mixed with fodder in Washim. Following this, the animal underwent a two-hour long surgery and the mangalsutra was recovered successfully.

The incident occurred in Sarsi village when Geeta, a farmer's wife, kept husk in a bowl to feed the buffalo. She had also opened her mangalsutra and absentmindedly kept it in the bowl before going for a bath.

The next day, she fed the buffalo with husks from the same bowl, and the buffalo swallowed the mangalsutra. When she couldn't find her the mangalsutra, she suspected someone must have stolen it. However, she soon realised she had kept it in the same bowl in which the buffalo was given the husk. When she checked the bowl, the mangalsutra was missing.

Worried the family approached a veterinarian. Then the local health officials in Washim used a metal detector to confirm the presence of the gold mangalsutra in the buffalo’s stomach. A sonography pointed to the exact location of the mangalsutra.

Dr Balasaheb Kondane, a health official from Washim, said a two-hour-long surgery was performed on the buffalo and the mangalsutra was retrieved. It had to undergo 60-65 stitches and is said to be doing well.
