Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has won the Australian Open over Adam Scott with a birdie on the final hole of the tournament.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, this is McIlroy's first tournament victory of the year in a dramatic finish at Royal Sydney.

Having led into the final round by four strokes, Scott could do little as McIlroy made up early ground on him and then sunk a long putt to win on the final hole, the report said.

Scott had led by one stroke into the 18th, but Scott's bogey gave the world no.6 a chance, the report added.

Former Australian Open champion John Senden shot a six-under round of 66 to finish third, according to the report.
