Olympic Qualifiers: Coronavirus causes Chinese women’s football team to play home leg in Sydney

The coronavirus outbreak has caused the Chinese women’s national team to play their home leg of the Olympic qualification playoff against South Korea in Sydney, the Asian Football Confederation said on Friday.

Last month, the Olympic qualifying tournament featuring China, Australia, Taiwan and Thailand was moved to Sydney from Wuhan, Reuters reported.

China has remained in Australia since their 1-1 draw against them last week, which earned them a two-legged contest with South Korea.

They will begin the playoff in Yongin on March 6 before returning to Sydney’s Campbelltown Stadium for the second leg on March 11.

The playoff winners will secure a place in the Tokyo Olympics soccer tournament, alongside hosts Japan and the winners of the other playoff match between Australia and Vietnam.

As for the coronavirus, it has killed more than 2,200 people in China. South Korea too on Friday have a number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infections as it rose to 156, a near tripling over three days.
