The coronavirus pandemic has got all sporting events to be pushed to a further date and due to this Indian shuttler, PV Sindhu could be the reigning World Champion for three straight years.

The World Badminton Championships, which is an annual event, was not supposed to take place this year as it was the Olympic year. However with 2020 already missing out on hosting the event, and with the Tokyo Games being postponed to next year, 2021, it is likely that the tournament may be skipped to the following year.

If this happens, Sindhu - who had won gold last year - may remain a World Champion for another two years.

As there is no window available for Badminton World Federation till November, Sindhu may fight to defend her title in 2022, which the shuttler isn’t entirely thrilled about.

“The most important thing for all of us is when would the tournaments begin. There were discussions about the Worlds, Olympics were postponed and now we all are waiting for the action to start,” Sindhu told Times of India Saturday.

As for the coronavirus outbreak, India continues to be in a 21-day lockdown and Sindhu, herself went into self-isolation since her return from the UK having played the All England Badminton Championships.

“The local police are monitoring us. A couple of days before my quarantine was to end, they extended it to April 5. They took our passports and pasted a sticker on our door. I enquired with my friends who returned from England and it’s the same routine for all of us,” she said.

“I am looking forward to play with my niece. I want to spend time with them.”

Sindhu also admitted that this is the first time, she has been away from badminton for so long. “Even when I was off for five months in 2015 due to injury I used to go to the court regularly. This is the first time I’ve not seen the court for over three weeks,” she concluded.
