According to media reports, revealing his tactics to push Tajinderpal to do well, coach Dhillon said, “I wanted to get him to get angry. I told him, ‘I have left my family for you and your father is fighting cancer. Think of us. I think it worked.”
“You die of shame,” shouted coach Dhillon from the sidelines as Tajinderpal was getting ready for his fifth throw in the men’s shot put final at the Asian Games.
Although Tajinderpal had almost assured a gold medal with his first throw, he was then struggling to even touch the 20m-mark, forget coming any closer to their target of 21,-mark.
Before heading for the fifth throw, Tajinderpal screamed loudly and returned with a new Asian Games-record of a 20.75m throw.
The gold medal was the result of an emotional journey between the two that started five years back. “His father was not well but he went to the Commonwealth Games. He was not ready to go. I had to persuade him to go since it it would have been a very good experience ahead of the Asian Games,” Dhillon added.
“He was in good form in the CWG but he could not do well. His father was serious when Tajinderpal came back from Gold Coast. I trained him in Delhi, where his father was undergoing treatment in AIIMS, before shifting to Patiala. From Patiala he would come to Delhi in every three to four days to attend.
I spoke to him and requested the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to shift the camp to Dharamsala as we wanted him not to get distracted by his father’s illness. He agreed since he would not be able to rush to Delhi from Dharamsala every second day as it would take 8 to 10 hours, unlike Patiala where it used to take only a few hours to reach Delhi,” Dhillon added..
