MUMBAI: After some initial hiccups, a 105-run second-wicket partnership between Tanvi Bhuskute and Rochita Date helped IES Chandrakant Patkar Vidyalaya (Dombivli) score a five-wicket victory over St Columba High School (Gamdevi) in the SBI-MSSA inter-school girls’ (under-16) cricket tournament final at the Azad Maidan on Friday.

Columba’s Meghna Mistry had managed to send back opener Nivedita Naidu with just 10 runs on board. Naidu couldn’t read the delivery and found her bails dislodged.

With 113 runs still required to score, Rochita and Tanvi held their nerves for a couple of overs. The two stepped on the gas just when the required run rate started climbing steadily, showing a great display of controlled aggression. The two went on to bash Columba bowlers for over 30 runs in a span of just two overs.

And just when the eventual winners were within an arm’s distance from the win, Tanvi was bowled by Akshata Dhoble.

Within a span of seven runs, another three IES wickets fell. Interestingly, Columba’s Ankita Patankar took two wickets in one over when the score was tied to invoke a few oohs and aahs from both the camps. It took a couple of overs before IES got the winning run, off a wide delivery by Neha Joil.

Earlier, Gamdevi school had posted a target of 122 runs, thanks to a half-century of sorts by the extras delivered by IES bowlers and Akshata Dhoble’s unbeaten 24-run knock. Rochita and Ruchira Salvi shared five wickets to put Columba on the backfoot before Akshata’s rescue act.

Unfortunately for Columba, their strike bowler and opening batswoman Gauri Sawant, who along with Akshata and Meghna had been the pillar for the team’s wins in the tournament, was out of form on Friday and provided little to boast off.

“We were sure that we could chase because we have a good batting line-up with Rochita, who has played for Maharashtra, and Tanvi. Though there was a bit of pressure before we went to chase, the two held the innings together,” said IES coach Vivek Mhatre.

“Tanvi and myself have been together in a similar situation and so it wasn’t difficult. We have earlier also been in such long partnerships and knew each other’s game very well,” said Rochita.

Brief scores:
IES Chandrakant Patkar Vidyalaya (Dombivli) 123 for 5 (Tanvi Bhuskute 40, Rochita Date 39, Ankita Patankar 2-3) beat St Columba High School 122 for 6 (Akshata Dhoble 24, Rochita Date 3-32, Ruchira Salvi 2-15)
