8,000 restaurants fail to renew police licence

Although, the Pune police claim that they take action against illegal hotels in the city at regular interval, the statistics available with the police shows that only 4,014 out of 12,000 restaurants in Pune have renewed and updated their police licence.

Although, the Pune police claim that they take action against illegal hotels in the city at regular interval, the statistics available with the police shows that only 4,014 out of 12,000 restaurants in Pune have renewed and updated their police licence.

A police licence is mandatory for operating hotel and restaurants and owners have to renew their them every year. Owners of almost two third of hotels and restaurants in the city have not renewed licences for last couple of years.

As per records with the Pune police, only 4,014 hotel and restaurant owners have updated and renewed their licences. These include 13 five star hotels, five four star hotels, three three star hotels and 806 lodges. Officers in-charge of various police stations are supposed to take action against those violating rules..

Speaking to DNA, assistant commissioner of police Shivaji Shelar, said, “Officers in-charge of various police stations are supposed to take action against hoteliers and submit their report to concerned ACPs. Hotel and restaurant owners should renew their licence after January 1 every year.”

Some senior officers claim that many hotels do not have a police licence and still no action is being taken against them.

Police officers said the issue was raised by them during a recent meeting with the hoteliers’ association and the association suggested that the police take stern action against defaulters.
The president of Pune Restaurants and Hoteliers Association, Ganesh Shetty, urged the police to take stern action against erring hotel owners.

“As per our records, as many as 12,000 restaurants have shop act licence, of which, about 7,000 hotels do not have police licence. We have urged police to take stern action against them,” Shetty added.
