In two separate incidents, South Mumbai police, on Saturday, arrested six people for illegally filling cans of an insect repellent with liquid petroleum gas  (LPG).

In a special drive conducted by the additional commissioner of police K Venkatesham, LT Marg police officials  nabbed Nayeem Gafoor Khan, 24, Sandeep Yadav, 38, and Bhagirathi Gupta, 48. “We carried out a raid at Vithoba Lane, Narayanwadi at Kalbadevi area and arrested three persons.

We also recovered 145 Baygon spray cans filled with LPG gas,” said senior police inspector Jayant Sarmokadam, LT Marg police station.

Sarmokadam further said that after filling the cans,, the accused would sell them for Rs25 each to ornaments makers in Zaveri Bazaar. “They have been involved in this nefarious activity since the last four months,” he added.

In a similar drive, a team led by senior inspector BK Chikale of VP Road police station raided an open space opposite Nirmal Niwas at Girgaon and nabbed Gulam Shiekh, 22, Shama Raut, 26 and Nasiruddhin Khan, 25, and also seized two LPG gas cylinders and 63 empty Baygon spray cans from them. All six were released on bail.
