A day ahead of Diwali, air quality in the city has deteriorated despite the measures that have been taken to curb the rising pollution. Apart from being engulfed in a haze, several areas of the city saw the particulate matter (PM) 2.5 which refers to tiny particles or droplets in the air known to cause respiratory illnesses being reported above 300 putting the air quality index (AQI) in 'very poor' category.

On Tuesday city's overall AQI, which is monitored by System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) of the city was recorded at 173 around afternoon, which later dipped to 145 by evening. An AQI level between 0-50 is categorised as 'good' while 51-100 is 'satisfactory' and 101-200, 201-300 and 301-400 is in the 'moderate', 'poor' and 'very poor' category respectively.

However, the major concern as per the portal of SAFAR, which monitors Air Quality Index (AQI) at 10 stations in Mumbai was that the PM 2.5 levels of Andheri (304), Mazgaon (316) and BKC (305) was in 'very poor' category. Meanwhile the safe limit as per Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for PM2.5 is 60 µg/m3 for 24 hours.

The city continued to reel under hot and humid weather as Tuesday's maximum temperature was recorded at 36.5°C while the minimum too was high at 25.5°C. Areas like Dadar, Lower Parel and other parts of Central Mumbai as well as South Mumbai has a thick blanket of haze, which could be due to increase in the PM 2.5 level.

Meanwhile officials at SAFAR stated that the city could see the air quality deteriorating from November 8 a day after Diwali owing to bursting of crackers.
