Mumbai COVID-19: BMC seals 1,169 buildings, identifies 97 areas as containment zones

As per BMC guidelines, any housing society having more than five active COVID-19 cases will be sealed and treated as a 'micro-containment zone'.

As COVID-19 cases are soaring in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sealed 1,169 buildings and identified 97 areas as containment zones. This comes at a time when Maharashtra on Friday recorded 63,729 new COVID-19 infections and the second-highest death toll of 398, with the state jumping past the 37 lakh mark.

The BMC has also sealed a total of 10,797 floors in the city to break the chain of the transmission. As per the guidelines issued by BMC, any housing society having more than five active COVID-19 cases will be sealed and treated as a 'micro-containment zone'. The BMC has warned of imposing fines if found violating its norms.

Till April 14, BMC sealed 1,100 buildings in the municipal area while there are 95 active containment zones (slums and chawls) in the civic area. The KW ward comprising areas like Char Bungalow, Lokhandwala Circle, Jogeshwari (W), Behram Baugh, Kevani Pada, Irla, Vile Parle (W), Gilbert Hill, Saat Bungalow, Sakhar Nagar, Juhu Road, Lallubhai Park, Versova, Andheri (W), Juhu, has 263 building sealed, followed by the D ward that has 253 sealed buildings.

Though Delhi has surpassed Mumbai in the number of daily rises in cases, Mumbai has more active COVID-19 cases than the national Capital. As per government data, Mumbai has 85,494 active COVID-19 cases, while Delhi's active caseload stands at 54,309. Mumbai's total COVID-19 death toll is 12,189, while Delhi has seen 11,652 total deaths.

In Maharashtra, fatalities went up from 349 a day earlier to 398 today, compared with the highest 481 deaths (April 2), and the toll shot up from 59,153 on Thursday to 59,551 now, the worst in the country.
