The LT Marg police on Saturday arrested a 28-year old man for allegedly stealing around 10kilograms of gold from a jewellery manufacturing unit. The youth was employed at the unit by his brother, who is friend of the unit owner, to get some work experience.

The arrested person has been identified as Rakesh Sonigra, resident of Choonawala Building at Chira Bazaar.

According to the police, complainant (name withheld), runs gold ornaments manufacturing unit known as Shree Nakoda Jewellers at Zaveri Bazaar. He accepts orders from the customers and makes ornaments from pure gold. Around 18 months ago, Sonigra was kept on the job by the victim after his friend Kamlesh Sonigra insisted him to give work experience to his brother.

“Sonigra was kept on monthly salary basis by the victim. Sonigra’s job was to take money from those whom had placed orders with the shop and deliver the ornaments to them. He was also aware that there is an underground locker in the shop and gold ornaments are kept in it,” said an officer from LT Marg police station.

He added, on November 14, victim came to the shop as per daily routine and had kept the locker key on his table. “He then left the for a nearby Jain temple at around 12pm and returned in an hour. He found the shop’s main door locked. He then opened the door from his duplicate key and found Sonigra missing. On checking the locker he found ornaments worth Rs2.90 crore missing,” said the officer.

The victim called on Sonigra’s mobile phones, but his phones were switched off. “Victim then went to Kamlesh’s shop and found Sonigra there. On enquiring with him about the ornaments, Sonigra admitted that he had taken them, as he wanted to repay some debts. He promised to return the ornaments to the victim next day, after which the victim left,” the officer said.

On November 16, when Sonigra didn’t return back the ornaments to the victim and had went into hiding, the victim approached deputy commissioner of police, Zone II, Anil Kumbhare and narrated him about the incident. Kumbhare then asked Pydhonie police to look into the matter, sources said.

“We had received specific information that Sonigra was at his uncle’s place in Jogeshwari. We then reached the place and nabbed him. Since the incident had occurred in the jurisdiction of LT Marg police station, we have handed over Sonigra’s custody to them,” said the officer. The police are in the process of recovering the stolen property and are also investigating whether more persons were involved in the crime.
