Single and mingling

DNA recently went for a singles party and survived to tell her tale.

It felt like a scene straight out of the sitcom Sex and the City. A friend invited me to be part of an online community called Footloose fancy…and that’s how it all began. The group is founded by Varsha Agnihotri and her brother Abhishek. The whole idea of the group is to help singles in the city meet other singles and hook up with them. Socially, for starters.

After much discussion with friends, I decided to wear denims and a ‘pretty’ top. I didn’t want to flaunt skin as I didn’t want to come across as ‘too desperate’. I reached the party at around 10:30pm and the minute I saw strange new faces around me, I wanted to run away. But I didn’t, thanks to my friend. With trembling feet, I climbed the steps of the upper deck at Hard Rock Cafe, Worli. I met the organizers and said a polite ‘hi’. After some time, I headed to the bar for vodka.

To make myself comfortable, I sank into a suede sofa and sipped  on it. Suddenly, a tall, slightly healthy guy comes and parks himself beside me. The conversation starts and it’s very damp. I excused myself to the bar but strangely he too wanted a drink. So, we both took up and he walked ahead of me, I walked two steps behind him and took a u-turn and ran back for another sofa. Phew! I survived.

The whole night was a maze. The boys did the chasing and I did the chatting. Whilst I was taking a break from the boys, I met a lady who was in her mid-30s. She’s sweet and equally apprehensive. And we immediately clicked. Just when I was about to give up my search, a guy smiled and said hi. He squeezed in beside me. And no, flowers didn’t blossom and there were no violins playing in the background (I guess it was AC/DC). Sweet and very  well turned out, the young lad spoke about himself and joked about his intense affair with hash. We spoke about everything — food, books, philosophy, pets, style statements, the way people were dressed and about friends. He was mad, like me, witty and drunk. Conversation flowed till the wee hours. Certainly I made friends, don’t know if the search is over yet.

Verdict: I think everyone should once try a singles party, just for fun. And maybe in turn break a few boundaries.
