The third day of the Bhadrapada month is dedicated to the Hartalika Teej Vrat. On this specific day, temporary idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are made from sand and revered as a sign of the prayers offered for a happy marriage.

'Hartalika Teej' gets its name from an intriguing festival-related mythology. The name "Hartalika" comes from two words: "Harat," which means abduction, and "Aalika," which denotes a female companion. Women do this vrat (ritual) to ask Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's blessings on their marriages and the well-being of their families as a whole.

When is Hartalika Teej?
Hartalika Teej will be observed on September 18, 2023, Monday.

What is the significance of Hartalika Teej?
Hartalika Teej, which represents the reconciliation of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, has special significance for married Hindu women. The legend claims that before marrying Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati endured a period of extreme devotion and penance. She followed a stringent abstinence regimen amid the deep Himalayan forests.

She is said to have made a Shivalinga out of sand on the third day of the brilliant lunar fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada, during the Hasta Nakshatra, and then committed herself to Lord Shiva's worship. She proposed marriage to Lord Shiva, who then appeared before her in his heavenly form and accepted her proposal for marriage.
